What I'm learning about 🧠

Treadmill friends and sofa friends.

This is a simple concept that I've stolen borrowed from George Mack.

It quickly explains something you've known deep down all along.

And why you'd rather put your face in boiling water than spend another minute with your "friend" Kevin.

You can divide your friends into two categories.

First, we have treadmill friends.

These are the people who leave you with so much energy after seeing them you need to run on a treadmill.

The opposite are sofa friends.

People that leave you so drained you to have to lie on a sofa afterwards.

This week, make a list of your friends and write a "T" or an "S" next to each name.

Text your treadmill friends and make some exciting plans together.

For the sofa friends, I recommend a subtle sayonara.

Or, you could go nuclear and tell them to talk a long walk off a short pier.

Looks like it's time to tell Kevin to go kick rocks...

What I'm thinking about πŸ’

Upgrading your life through better questions.

Questions are powerful.

I regularly stumble across ones that change my life.

Not in a dramatic, quit-my-job-and-shave-my-head kind of way.

But in subtle ways that improve my subjective experience of reality.

A recent game-changer, that I wrote about previously, was asking:

"I wonder what I'll learn from this experience" when trying something new.

This has repeatedly allowed me to shift from fear and trying to get it right, into much more helpful emotions of curiosity and wonder.

Today I'd like to share another question that's made my life better.

Take a deep breath and ask yourself:

"How would I approach this situation if I already had EVERYTHING I've ever wanted."

This instantly shifts you into a mindset of abundance and giving.

Imagine for a moment, if you had an abundance of:

  • Time
  • Money
  • Love
  • Meaning & excitement in your life

If you were completely and totally filled up, how differently might you approach:

  • Your child interrupting your *important* work
  • Someone cutting you off in traffic
  • Negotiating with a friend
  • Tipping at a restaurant
  • Your daily schedule and to-do list

To me, even considering the possibility of having everything I've ever wanted feels so nourishing.

It feels like I can finally take a deep breath and exhale.

That I can stop running around from task to task like I'm on fire.

Try approaching your next interaction from a place of total abundance.

Ask yourself how you'd show up if you HAD EVERYTHING already.

If you didn't need anything and could give freely and happily.

I think you'll discover two things:

  1. It feels freakin' amazing
  2. People will LOVE being around you

Quote of the week πŸ“œ

β€œWhere you arrive does not matter so much as what type of person you are when you arrive there." - Seneca

P.S. This has been written on my whiteboard for the past two years

Some seriously meaningful episodes of The Dare to Dream Podcast.

For those of you who are new here, I started a podcast back in 2020 with one of my best friends in the world.

We were both quitting our corporate jobs and wanted to document the wild ride into the unknown.

Fast forward to today and we are still happily discussing what it's like to follow your dreams and what advice is most helpful.

Watch our latest episode on YouTube here.

We had a ton of fun recording this one!
